FROM THE DESK OF ROGER NEWELL, PRESIDENT ACF CENTRAL FL. CHAPTER

Greetings Fellow Culinarians,

Mentoring, mentorship: mentor (men tor) n; a wise and trusted counselor or teacher, n. to give recommendations to (someone) about a decision or course of action: advise, counsel, recommend, verb.

Chefs, this is a very simple definition of a very important process.
Mentoring in a formal or informal way has been around for years. Some of us may have had a mentor during our early culinary training years. I personally had a couple of Chefs who I could call and talk to on some of those days when I wondered, "What have I gotten myself into?"

To provide the opportunity for the students in any of the culinary schools in our surrounding area, the chapter Board of Directors has started an informal mentoring program of our own. During our last general meeting, I asked all the Chefs in attendance for a business card. I then passed them on to Chef Michael Lodge at the Orlando Culinary Academy. Chef Lodge is going to file all the cards, and if a student of any culinary program in our area would like to talk to an active chef, Chef Lodge is going to put them in contact with someone. Not everyone was able to attend our last meeting; however every active Chef in the chapter can get involved by either sending Chef Lodge your card, or emailing your contact information to mlodge@orlandoculianry.com. This is a great opportunity for you as active Chefs to give something back to those who are the future of our industry. Don’t let it slip away.
Watch the web site www.acfcfc.org, for more information.

The next few months will be busy ones for the chapter. This is the time of year when we begin our community fund raising projects. Taste of Compassion will be held on Tuesday April 15th on the grounds of the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Orlando. This is a great evening that gives us the opportunity to raise a lot of money for the homeless and displaced population of Central FL.

In May we will have our annual social meeting only, at a spot to be determined, watch the web site for details.

As we head into Spring, I wish you all good health, and may your businesses prosper.

Hope to see you all at our next general meeting.

Stay safe,

Chef Roger
