| FROM THE DESK OF ROGER NEWELL, PRESIDENT ACF CENTRAL FL. CHAPTER |
Greetings Fellow Culinarians,
Well here we are in the home stretch of 2008; dodging hurricanes, and getting ready for the (hopefully) influx of visitors.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chef Steven Jayson for another well run and successful culinary competition at the FRLA show on September 5, 6, & 7. Also a huge thank you goes out to everyone who donated their time to insure that the competition ran smoothly. I especially want to thank the students from Mid Florida Tech, Orlando Culinary Academy, and Valencia Community College who took time from the personal lives to show up and assist the kitchen manager with set up and breakdown of the show kitchens. This is an enormous task, and could not have been accomplished without your help. THANK YOU!
The chapter meeting calendar is set for the remainder of the year, with some great educational sessions lined up. Remember Chefs, you are never too old to learn, we welcome students of all ages at the meeting.
I would also like to address a situation that has come up since my trip to the national convention in July. As you may know, this is a nomination year for anyone wishing to run for regional or national office. The procedure for nominations is that during the Board of Governors meeting, nominations for office are accepted when we reach that part of the meeting agenda. Anyone can make a nomination; you do not have to be a chapter president or officer.
This year a Chef acquaintance of mine asked me if I would enter their name into the running for national president. I am a firm believer in taking on an opportunity if you think you have the time, the energy, and the inclination to do so. This Chef has all those criteria, so as an ACF member I agreed to do so. When you nominate someone, you must announce your name and chapter affiliation. I did so and clearly stated that I was nominating this person on my own. What I did not expect was that my nomination would be interpreted as an endorsement from our chapter for this candidate.
The ACF Central FL Chapter has never, nor will they ever openly endorse any candidate for any elected office of the ACF. We are a chapter of intelligent, open minded Chefs, Cooks, and Bakers, who are capable of listening to all the candidates’ platforms and making an informed personal decision based on those platforms.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our fall meetings, and wish you all a profitable winter.
Don’t forget to vote November 4th
If you don’t vote, don’t complain.
Regards,
Chef Roger
