FROM THE DESK OF ROGER NEWELL, PRESIDENT ACF CENTRAL FL. CHAPTER

Greetings Fellow Culinarians,

Well Chefs, spring is almost here, officially 3/20, and it is time to start hoping that we get the annual influx of tourists to keep us busy.

For the chapter, it is also time to finish the planning for our first community event of the year, Taste of Compassion. Chef Richard Cote, CEC and chairman of the event tells me that despite the sluggish economy, Chef and property participation is actually higher than last year. This just proves what I have said for years, the Central FL chapter chefs have a lot of heart and caring for those in need. Thanks in advance to all the properties and Chefs who will be participating.

We started the year with two very exciting and informational seminars. If you did not get to either meeting, you missed some very good information. But stay tuned, because the rest of the year is shaping up to be the same way. Aprils meeting will be a first, as we present a competitors forum. Some of the best competing chefs in the area, as well as a highly respected national judge will be on hand to offer some insight and tips in the art of culinary competition.

Our annual social meeting is also shaping to be very interesting. That night we will have all four of the candidates for national ACF president on hand to present their platforms, and have the opportunity to talk to everyone present, one on one. Also joining us that evening will be SE regional VP candidates, and national Treasurer candidates as well, should be a very interesting evening. This will be their last opportunity to address a gathering of chefs before the ballots go in the mail.

Just some notes to keep in mind. This year’s chapter Chef of the Year and Culinarian of the Year will be chosen from Chefs who have been nominated by their peers, according to the new criteria. The criteria are posted on the chapter website, and easy for all to see. If you are considering nominating someone for one of these awards, please read the criteria closely to insure your choice is following them.

Also this year, a new board of directors will be elected. If you have ever thought about getting involved in the running of the chapter, this is the time to attend some board and general meetings to see the process first hand.

As I have stated before, both of these elections will be done on-line, so it is very important that if you change your email address you send your new one to rogerfsd@yahoo.com.

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the passing of two of our ACF/CFC family. Chef Audrey Lennon, Chef of the Year 2008, and Marlene Stamatin, the wife of our member consideration chair Gus Stamatin both passed away in February. Two very involved and strong ladies, they will be deeply missed by their families and the chapter. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lennon and Stamatin families.

Remember, all meeting and special event information is posted on the chapter website, www.acfcfc.org , and if you have any questions at all don’t hesitate to contact one of the board members.

Stay safe, hope to see you soon,

Chef Roger
